Our new Scientific Committee

We are proud to introduce our new Scientific Committee, bringing together leading experts to help shape the continued development of research, encourage the exchange of scientific insights, and advance understanding across the industry.

With their expertise and guidance, the committee will strengthen our conference's scientific foundation, ensuring our program continues to deliver meaningful research, foster collaboration, and drive informed discussion on the challenges and opportunities shaping the sector's future.

Nick Molden

Kent Johnson

Georgios Karavalakis

Georgios Karavalakis leads an experimental research program in combustion engines, alternative fuels, and transportation emissions. He received his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the National Technical University of Athens. He earned his MSc in environmental engineering and his BEng(Hons) in engineering from the University of Portsmouth. Current research focuses on the environmental impacts of low-carbon and zero-carbon fuels and their interaction with emerging engine technologies. He is particularly interested in the physicochemical characterization of emissions from ground and marine transportation, gaseous and liquid fuels, and PM health effects. He leads research on measuring secondary aerosol formation from combustion engines.

Guenter Engling

Oxford graduate Nick Molden FRSC has more than fifteen years’ experience in the information sector, specialising in advanced modelling techniques to help businesses extract profit from data. Through real-world testing Nick is profoundly committed to improving vehicle emissions. As well as leading Emissions Analytics, he is the co-founder of the AIR Alliance, and is an Honorary Research fellow at Imperial College London. In 2025, Nick was recognised as an award-winning author, receiving the Award of Excellence for Current Events & Environmental Sustainability from the APEX Awards, for his co-written book ‘Critical Mass: The One Thing You Need to Know About Green Cars’ alongside Felix Leach.

Dr. Johnson has worked at UC Riverside for over 30 years and is internationally recognized as a leader in emissions from combustion sources, specifically under real world conditions. He directed, organized, and hosted an annual international conference on in-use testing for 15 years and has been a guest on two television programs (MythBusters) to serve as an expert witness for in-use testing. He has his Ph.D. in Chemical and Environmental Engineering, an MS Degree in Electrical Engineering, and a BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Dr. Guenter Engling is currently an Air Pollution Specialist at the California Air Resources Board and is passionate about improving our understanding of toxic and climate-forcing pollutants in our air. With degrees in atmospheric science, environmental analytical chemistry and chemical engineering, he focusses on characterizing aerosol particles and specifically their organic constituents. He has planned, led and participated in numerous air pollution studies on multiple continents, investigating ambient air pollution patterns as well as source emission characteristics. Dr. Engling has also developed new chemical analysis methods for molecular source tracers, and the results of his work are documented in over 80 peer-reviewed journal articles.

This event is organized as part of Emissions Analytics’ USA 2027 Conference. Take a look at all three co-located conferences taking place at the Beckman Center, March 25-26.
