Emissions Analytics’ inaugural Tyre Emissions & Sustainability Europe conference took place in Prague, February 2024.

For the last 3 years, we have welcomed leaders from both industry and academia to share their insights and perspectives regarding how we tackle the challenge of developing tyres with less environmental impact. Tyres are essential for our society to function.

How do we produce tyres that are well designed enough to minimise polluting tyre wear but are constructed in a way that is easy to recycle? How can the tyre industry become more sustainable while delivering tyres to consumers at an affordable price? Throughout the supply chain, there are challenges, but there is also real progress.

In July 2026, we will reconvene in Berlin to discuss what comes next. We hope you can join us!

Emissions

Tyres shed approximately six million tonnes of material per year and are widely recognised as a considerable source of vehicle emissions. A limit on tyre wear is likely to be included in Euro 7 legislation. There is increased scrutiny regarding tyre ingredients and their environmental impact, particularly compounds such as the preservative 6PPD, cited for depleting fish stocks. Regulation of the chemical composition of tyres is being led by authorities such as the California Environmental Protection Agency.

Sustainability

Over two billion tyres are manufactured every year. What opportunities are there to reduce the carbon footprint and environmental impact of a tyre from production to end-of-life? How can the tyre industry develop a sustainable sourcing system for raw materials and end-of-life recycling to develop a true circular economic cycle? Are current regulations sufficient to encourage and protect a sustainable supply chain? Tyre manufacturing is an energy intensive process – what can be done to improve efficiency and decarbonise?
